Spring Plant Sale Begins April 6th

Reality Check 2009
Everyone needs a dose of REALITY in their life. Mid-America Technology Center, Cooperative Extension Service in Cleveland, Garvin, and McClain counties, Health Departments and volunteers are holding a one-day Reality Check event. On April 8, 2009, at Mid-America Career Tech Center over 450 young people will be given the opportunity to explore real life situations and make lifestyle, career, and budget choices at the Reality Check.
The following schools will have participating freshmen students: Lexington, Maysville, Newcastle, Purcell, and Wayne. students will tour the mini-city set up in the conference room of the Health Sciences building on the Mid America campus.
At the Reality Check, students will be given an occupation based on their educational plans after high school. They will then be given an amount of play money equivalent to the average monthly salary in that occupation. The students will then go into a Reality Check where they will spend their salary on the necessities and luxuries they envision as part of the adult lifestyle. Students will also have the opportunity to visit the chance booth to pull out a “Chance” card. These are those unexpected items that affect their life daily.
Local representatives from the housing industry, utilities, grocery stores, department stores, financial institutions, auto dealerships, medical profession, child care centers, travel and entertainment, etc., will be present at the Reality Check to help students determine how much of their income will need to be spent in each category in order to provide them with their desired lifestyle.
Freshmen relate to this project and hopefully discover the value of making good educational and financial choices that will affect their future. Adults will enjoy the opportunity to interact with high school students helping to influence decisions regarding an important aspect of the student’s future.
